On Friday 18th November, Arnot St Mary supported the charity Children in Need. To help raise funds for the event, 5MC baked cakes to be sold at the cake sale at the end of the day. We also had our faces painted to show our support. We loved making the cakes, especially when we got to eat some of the left over icing and butter cream. Yummy! Have a look at our photos below to see what we got up to.

If you would like to donate to the Children in Need charity, you can do by following the link to the BBC website link. Children in Need. For all you game players out there, why not try the Pudsey games too. Click here.

This week we have been looking at the properties of shapes. First, we ventured outside to find parallel lines, which are lines which will never meet. Following that, we investigated right angles in shapes. To put our knowledge to the test, we then made common shapes using our bodies. See if you can spot some of them in our pictures.

Why not have a go at shapes yourself. Here are a few websites which you can have a go of. Sorting Shapes and Properties of Quadrilaterals

The Highwayman – By Emily Blakeway

Here is a wonderful poem written by Emily Blakeway. It is based on The Highwayman, a poem which Year 5 have been studying.

The Highwayman

He comes riding on a horse,
Gallop you may hear,
A mask around his face,
His neck wearing lace.

Brave and mysterious,
You know when he’s near,
Smitten and mischievous,
It’s a Highwayman we’re talking about here!

The women loved him for being a hidden thief,
The men gritted their teeth.
The Highwayman had a lack of respect,
With the Redcoats wished to detect.

To stop him from his evil task,
They had to remove that mask,
Bang! The Highwayman was shot,
And ever since, never been forgot!

Well done Emily. What a beautiful poem!

Since returning from the Easter break, Year 5 have been studying The Highwayman, a poem by Alfred Noyes. After looking at the different elements of the poem, like similes and metaphors, the children took on the roles of Bess, The Highwayman, Tim, the ostler and a Redcoat. Here they are acting out the main events in the poem.

If you would like to read The Highwayman then click here. Also there is a great video which captures the love and tragedy between Bess and The Highwayman. Click here to see the video.

Year 5MC started the year off with their problem solving caps on. Using a puzzle from the new Professor Layton and the Lost Future, the children had to rearrange the shapes into the shape of Professor Layton’s hat. Here are some pictures of the children working hard.

Well done to all the children, especially those who cracked it. Believe me, it was no easy task. Here is the problem. Have a go yourself.
